Joshua Tree: Skull Rock

February 8, 2016 Clancy McKenna

There is a location on the park map called Skull Rock. There is a sign on the road pointing it out, and always seven or ten cars, or campers parked there, taking photos and pointing, and another sign inside the campground, showing the way to Skull Rock Trail. I hiked over there yesterday, and yes, erosion has created cavities that look sort of skull-like, but this entire landscape is filled with rocks that resemble familiar objects!

Skull Rock. Big Deal.

Skull Rock. Big Deal.

Why doesn’t Park Service put up a sign that points to Mitten Rock? Or Moby Rock, Camel Humps Rock, or to Snuffleupagus Rock, and Way Too Many Teeth Rock? Or even Grumpy Muppet Rock?

I don’t understand why Skull Rock is the only one that rates to have a trail and a roadside sign. I’m sure that if my grandsons, Jack, Ted, and Charlie were here, they’d find tons of interesting shapes. Get it? Tons.
